High demand at mass COVID vaccine clinics | Bega District News

There’s been growing demand at Victoria’s mass vaccination clinics as people over 50 lined up for their COVID jab. From Monday, anyone aged over 50 can get an AstraZeneca vaccine at high volume clinics in Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat. “This is what we wanted to see. We have over two million Victorians aged 50 and above who need to be vaccinated in the weeks and months ahead,” testing chief Jeroen Weimar told the media. “There’s a huge sense of relief for all of us that we can finally get on and get ourselves vaccinated, this is one of those days that we have been waiting for for a long time.” More than 8500 people phoned the state’s coronavirus hotline on Monday morning to book vaccine appointments, with 700 call centre staff taking their calls. Mr Weimar conceded that some people had waited more than an hour for their jab, and promised to work on increasing capacity if the high demand continued. “We are the only place in Australia that has got this scale of vaccination available to people,” he said. He said health authorities were working closely with the commonwealth to access as much vaccine as possible. About 520,000 Victorians have received at least one dose of the vaccine so far, but about five million people need to be vaccinated. Health authorities are urging people to check the health department’s list of exposure sites if they had recently been to Brisbane or Perth. There are 21 active cases of the virus in the state, confined to hotel quarantine, with one new case reported. Australian Associated Press
