HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Hastings College graduate Daniel Whitehall is the newest member of Kilmarnock, a football club in the Scottish Premier League.
“It’s full time football in a massive club in the premier league in Scotland,” Whitehall said. “To have this opportunity, I’m not taking it lightly and I’m just really excited and nervous at the same time to do well.”
Whitehall signed a six-month contract with Kilmarnock after playing for Maidenhead United F.C., a fifth-tier team in England.
Whitehall played for Hastings College from 2015 to 2018, setting the record for most goals with 93. The next closest is 20 behind him.
In 2016, Hastings College went 24-0-1 and won its second national championship. That season Whitehall set the singe-season record scoring 34 goals, winning the NAIA National Player of the Year award in the process.
“A quote I quite like is, ‘It’s not about being in the right place at the right time. It’s about being in the right place all the time,‘” he said.
Whitehall said he does not have the experience the other players on Kilmarnock’s roster have but he learned a lot in his time in Nebraska playing for the Broncos and the semi-pro team in Omaha, Bugeaters F.C.
“I’ve learned a lot of patience over the last five years and not giving up,” Whitehall said. “There’s been plenty of times where I could have given up. Things I think that a lot of people would have said, ‘Oh, it’s not going to work out for me,’ but I’ll keep going and I’ll work hard each day. I’m very committed to what I’m doing.”
Whitehall will not be in the starting 11 but he will get his opportunities to prove himself. Kilmarnock opens its season Aug. 1 when they play Hibernian.
